Life Expectancy Underwriting Evaluations

EMSI has been processing life expectancy evaluations since 2001. An essential factor in EMSI’s life expectancy evaluations is using medical underwriters with impaired risk underwriting expertise and substantial industry experience to evaluate longevity risk versus premature death risk.

EMSI does not adhere to a one-size-fits-all methodology or use only formulas or codes to determine the risk. EMSI's underwriters create a life expectancy evaluation by combining a medical assessment, actuarial statistics and results from an actuarial risk calculator with information on daily living habits and demographics.

EMSI utilizes life expectancy underwriting mortality tables based on the Society of Actuaries 2008 Valuation Basic Table (VBT). EMSI’s mortality tables not only reflect the 2008 VBT’s mortality improvement in the general population, but also include different patterns of mortality between the life insurance and life settlement industries.

EMSI also engages actuarial expertise to periodically measure the accuracy of its life expectancy evaluations. The most recent analysis indicated mortality patterns were consistent across demographic segments, resulting in an aggregate 97 percent actual-to-expected mortality ratio based upon the 2008 Valuation Basic Table.
